GDM at SACTA: Emphasizing the Importance of Systems that Protect Intellectual Property in South Africa

GDM participated in the Congress and Annual Meeting of SACTA (South Africa Cultivar & Technology Agency NPC), held on August 20 in Pretoria with participation from the most important companies in the industry worldwide. GDM shared its vision on the Breeding and Technology Levies (BLT) system, the entity’s taxation methodology.

BTL is a tool that supports innovation and competitiveness in the system, as it is based on a high level of consensus among industry players and a simple and straightforward value capture strategy. Recognition of intellectual property is essential to encourage investment by companies like ours“, said Agustín Herrera, Global IP Executive Manager at GDM, after participating as a speaker for the company at the event.

GDM has been operating in South Africa since 2005 and launched its first soybean variety with Round Up Ready technology in 2014. Currently, 70% of sales are with INTACTA technology through Agricol, the company’s primary partner in the country. In 2023, it launched its first commercial wheat varieties, with a projection to reach 50% market share in five years.

With the launch of new biotechnologies, the future scenario projects exponential growth in the company’s positioning in South Africa.
